American military officer and statesman (1826–1886) who fought in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War. An activist on behalf of veterans’ affairs, Logan was instrumental in the creation of Memorial Day as a public holiday. Ink signature, “John A. Logan,” on an off-white 2.25 x .75 lightly-lined slip, affixed to an original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Logan in military uniform, wearing a mourning ribbon on his left arm after Lincoln’s assassination. A couple trivial stray ink marks to the slip and a small tear to the right border of the carte-de-visite, otherwise fine condition. RRAuction COA.
