Description

“Tibbets and Sweeney think they won the war…Tibbets did a bad job and Sweeney a lousy one but not the way they tell it”

Deputy Group Commander of the 509th Composite Group. Three items: TLS, signed “Tom,” one page, 8.5 x 11, January 24, 2001. In part; “I don’t take much pride in the deputy job as my work in the 509th was Co of the 393rd BS. I put the outfit together, did all the tough work and now Sweeney takes the credit. I also don’t think much of Tibbets and his henchmen either, but that’s another story.” An ALS, signed “Tom,” one page, 8.5 x 11, no date. In part: “Hope you won’t be mad at me but I don’t want my signature on anything with Tibbets and Sweeney…Tibbets and Sweeney think they won the war. The fact is and I have read that the last two months of the war it was safer over Japan than at the training bases back in the States. Tibbets did a bad job and Sweeney a lousy one but not the way they tell it.” And a glossy 8 x 10 photo of Classen in uniform, signed in blue felt tip. In fine condition. RRAuction COA.
