In part; “I have been honored in the receipt of the invitation of the Commission in relation to the Dedication of the Washington Monument, to be present at the same on the 21st day of Feb. I have also received your invitation for the same purpose; in which you express the hope the [sic] that I will accept the invitation tendered to me. In view of the importance of the event and its National Character, I do not feel at liberty to decline your invitation, and I cordially accept the same.
