Description

Hayes oversees the building of an institution to care for Ohio’s handicapped

LS signed “R. B. Hayes,” two pages, 7.75 x 9.75, State of Ohio, Executive Department letterhead, February 3, 1868. Governor Hayes writes to the Chairman of the House Finance Committee. In part: "One of the contractors for completing work on the Deaf & Dumb Asylum finds himself unable to proceed without a payment for work already done. The item of $40,000 in the appropriation bill passed by the General Assembly…is for 'continuing the work upon the building' and I do not feel authorized to use any part of it to pay for work already done.” A couple partial separations along horizontal mailing folds and a uniform shade of mild toning, otherwise fine condition. The Ohio Institution for the Deaf and Dumb opened in 1829, in a rented house in Columbus. The building Hayes constructed remained in service until 1953, and the institution still teaches the handicapped today. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
