Description

Daniel Chester French

American sculptor (1850–1931) best known for his monumental historical works, most notably the sculpture that forms the centerpiece of the Lincoln Memorial. Two items: one vintage matte-finish 3.75 x 6.25 photo of French in front of a minuteman relief, signed at the bottom in black ink, “Most truly yours, Daniel Chester French”; and one ALS signed “Daniel C. French,” one page, 8 x 10, personal letterhead, New York, November 26, 1898, in part: “Will you be kind enough to send me three unmounted photographs of the Minute Man—the best plate you have.” Silvering to dark areas of the image, and intersecting folds, moderate block of toning, and a couple repaired tears to the letter, otherwise fine condition. RR Auction COA.
