The soon-to-be Supreme Court justice, Holmes, to an admirer: “There is no photograph such as you desire of my father and myself together”

Associate Justice of the Supreme Court (1841–1935) from 1902 to 1932, and son of the famous ‘Fireside Poet.’ ALS signed “O. W. Holmes,” one page, 5 x 8, Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court letterhead, September 3, 1902. Letter to a gentleman. In full: “I have no photograph to spare. So many have asked for them that I am cleaned out & can do no more than refer you to the Norman Photographic Co, 3 Park Street, Boston. There is no photograph such as you desire of my father and myself together.” In fine condition, with mild toning to the edges. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, filled out in Holmes’s hand. At the time, Holmes was the chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court; he took his seat on the United States Supreme Court, as appointed by Theodore Roosevelt, on December 4, 1902.
