Description

The former first lady forwards a portrait in gratitude for a friend’s “consideration of me & my lamented Husband”

Wife of president James K. Polk (1803–1891) and first lady from 1845 to 1849. ALS signed “Mrs. Polk,” one page both sides, 4.75 x 7.25, “Polk Place,” March 21, 1872. Letter to Mrs. Gillett. In part: “Mr. S. has just left, & while my heart was full of gratitude, I write this hasty note asking your acceptance of the enclosed photograph. Be pleased my dear friend to assure Mr. Gillett, that I appreciate his consideration of me & my lamented Husband. How in the evening of life, such remembrances are bright spots, but few of my former associates are remaining, & none hold a higher place in my affections.” A small tear to right edge, a few creases, and scattered toning and soiling, otherwise fine condition. Polk outlived her husband by 42 years, never remarrying, and always clad in black. RR Auction COA.
