John Greenleaf Whittier

American Quaker poet and abolitionist (1807–1892) best known for such works as ‘Barbara Frietchie’ and ‘Maud Muller,’ which includes the immortal line, “For of all sad words of tongue or pen, The saddest are these: ‘It might have been!’ “ ALS signed “John J. Whittier,” one page, 3.75 x 4.75, April 28, 1869. Brief letter reads, in part: “I thank thee for thinking of me in connection with the publication of thy father’s poems. I take pleasure in enclosing a photograph just taken.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope and an unsigned carte-de-visite photo of Whittier by Warren of Boston. In fine condition, with some scattered creases. RR Auction COA.
