“He can get a good print from it—to send to me—that I may get a new plate engraved”

Pioneering American social activist (1820–1906) who was one of the leading figures in early feminism and whose efforts on behalf of women’s suffrage were instrumental in the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920. ALS, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.5 x 8.5, National Woman Suffrage Association letterhead, Rochester, March 22, 1887. Letter to a friend. In part: “I am in receipt of a letter from your sister Mrs. Davis of Vermont—who says she has given your brother A. O. of Ukiah a good picture of your dear mother—& that he thinks he can get a good print from it—to send to me—that I may get a new plate engraved…I have written to A.O. begging him to do his best and if he fails—to send the negative back to me—and let me try our best photographer here—and see if cannot get a good print…do all you can to get a good picture of your Mother sent to me." In fine condition, with some trivial scattered soiling, and slight separation to one mailing fold, slightly affecting some writing. RR Auction COA.
