Eminent Russian composer (1844–1908) best known for such brilliantly orchestrated works as Scheherazade and for operatic staples like Sadko, The Tale of Tsar Saltan, and The Golden Cockerel. Rare original 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet photo by a photographer in St. Petersburg, signed and inscribed on the reverse in black ink, “A monsieur Guillaume Guide, N. Rimsky-Korsakov, 13 Avril 1890,” with a three-bar oboe solo AMQS from Capriccio Espagnol, which he identifies in his own hand. In fine condition, with a couple trivial surface marks to the image, and a few pencil notations and ink stamp to the reverse. Guide was an oboist and theater director at Belgium’s most famous opera house, La Monnaie, hence the oboe solo selection. RR Auction COA.
