Description

Fantastic cabinet photo of the man behind the Eiffel Tower

French engineer (1832–1923) best remembered for designing the tower that bears his name. Rare original 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet photo of Eiffel circa 1893, by Touranchet of Paris, signed and inscribed with a French sentiment at the top of the image in black ink, “A M. de Luna, G. Eiffel.” In very good condition, with a crease to the lower left corner of the mount, light damp staining to the lower right corner and right border, light scattered spots and impressions to the image, and a few areas of surface loss, mounting remnants, and small pencil and ink notations to the reverse. The Eiffel Tower was built in 1889 for the World’s Fair in Paris, and this image originates from the same time period. Eiffel is scarce in any format, and this is just the second signed portrait of him that we have offered. RR Auction COA.
