Description

John S. Pope

Kentucky-born Union general (1822–1892) who led the Army of the Mississippi in a campaign that opened the great river nearly to Memphis. His failures after the Peninsular Campaign and at Second Bull Run in August 1862 precipitated his replacement by General George McClellan. Dignified original 4 x 6.25 cabinet photo of Pope in full dress uniform, signed in the lower border in black ink, “Jno Pope, Maj Genl U.S.A.” Some light rubbing, small vertical crease to background, and some light edge curling from photo having been removed from its backing, which is not present, otherwise fine condition.
