Matte-finish 5 x 6.75 portrait of Whitman affixed to a 6.5 x 8.75 mount, signed on the image in black ink, “Walt Whitman, 1871.” In very good condition, with scattered surface marks to the photo, toning and soiling to the photo and mount, light silvering to dark areas of the image, and lightly trimmed edges to the photo and mount. Originally taken by George Rockwood, this is a slightly larger and earlier portrait of Whitman than usually seen, and dates to the same year that he published the fifth version of his most famous work, Leaves of Grass.
