Handwritten endorsement, in pencil, signed “LN,” on a manuscript petition addressed to him as Prince-President of the II. Republic, one page, both sides, 8.25 x 12.75. In the petition, Ferrouil de Montgaillard implores Napoleon III to pardon his father, sentenced to five years imprisonment. The petitioner identifies himself as a soldier on active duty and details the attachment of his family to the Bonapartist cause and the service of France. “…My father has always been an honorable man. He served for 12 years in the regiment.” Endorsed “If the facts are not too serious I grant a full pardon.” Below Napoleon’s signature three members of the clergy support the petition in favor of Ferrouil de Montgaillard. Accompanied by a handwritten report from the Ministry of Justice, Department of Criminal Affairs and Pardons, declaring that “Ferrouil de Montgaillard lived in the same house as Mr. and Mrs. Marguet; under various pretexts he often went off with their little girl, 11 years old, and abandoned himself to heinous practices. Ferrouil is married with children. Testimony gathered during the investigation has established that before committing the crime for which he was sentenced, other children were victims of his infamous proclivities. He therefore appears quite unworthy of clemency by the Head of the State. The three ecclesiastics who support him were no doubt unaware of the facts established against him and did not foresee the ill effects a premature pardon would certainly produce.'' In very good condition, with intersecting folds, a light diagonal line of soiling through Napoleon’s signature, and scattered creasing and toning. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
