Description

Paul Dukas

French composer (1865–1935) best known for ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,’ interpreted to delightful effect in Disney’s Fantasia. ALS in French, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, black-bordered stationery, April 16, 1908. Letter to a colleague. In full (translated): “I am ill-informed on the question about which you have asked my advice. Therefore, I can only give you my very limited opinion. If it comes down to being a question of putting an end to orders for [complimentary theatre] tickets, you should just calmly but quickly establish a ruling. No one will lose anything by it: neither those who ask for them, nor those who offer them. As to the others, who pay for their seats and are not affected by this suppression, whom can this grave consultation interest?” In very good condition, with a central horizontal fold, mild scattered creases, small tape repair to reverse of second integral page, light erased pencil notation to upper right, and ownership stamp of renowned surgeon and collector Dr. Max Thorek below the signature. Accompanied by a small unsigned book photo of Dukas. RR Auction COA.
