Partly-printed DS as president, signed in purple ink, “U. S. Grant,” one page, 8.25 x 9.75, April 25, 1872. Grant orders the Secretary of State to “to affix the Seal of the United States to a Warrant for the pardon of John Rhodes, John Stuart and Thomas Vickers alias Texas.” In fine condition, with two horizontal folds, one through the base of the signature, light toning to top third of the page, and a couple light spots of foxing. The three men were convicted of assault, robbery, and burglary, and sentenced to ten years in prison, but were pardoned by Grant at the recommendation of the district attorney after completing four and a half years of the sentence. An intriguing background for a document beautifully signed by the 18th president. Accompanied by a photocopy of a document from Grant’s secretary, Hamilton Fish, describing the circumstances of the pardon. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
