In part: “I am obliged to you for the photograph—I have put it in my album I think it a very good one indeed and whenever I look upon it I shall be reminded of you always exactly as I first saw you at Fort Warren—I wish I could send you one of myself taken recently but I have none on hand—I could send you two however taken at different times by different artists—the one standing is from Brady Imperial taken some ten years ago—that at the time was said to be the best picture ever taken of me—it was taken in the attitude I usually assumed in addressing the House—Brady took several negatives of me when I was in Washington recently and I brought quite a number of card pictures of several of them with me but have given them all away.” In fine condition, with a couple light spots of soiling and show-through to the first page from text on reverse. Accompanied by an original CDV of Stephens published by E. Anthony of New York from an original photographic negative from Brady’s National Portrait Gallery, with Stephens posed as he describes in the letter. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
