American politician and jurist (1844–1921) who served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 1910 to 1921, best known for establishing the ‘Rule of Reason’ standard of interpretation for antitrust law. TLS signed “E. D. White,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 6.75, January 10, 1911. Letter to H. Dorsey Etchison. In full: “Your kind letter of the 9th came to me this morning and I thank you very warmly for having written it. In saying this, however, I make due allowance for your all too generous expressions, which of course I know come from the dominancy of your kind impulses over your powers of judgment. I shall endeavor to do my best not to be unworthy of your esteem and friendship.” In fine condition, with two spots of soiling to the left side. Accompanied by an unsigned 5 x 7 portrait.
