Pioneering surgeon recommends a colleague

Surgeon and educator (1800–1884) who was the first American to operate on an abscessed appendix and served as a professor at Columbia’s New York College of Physicians and Surgeons. ALS signed “W. Parker,” one page, 8 x 10, July 25, 1853. Letter of recommendation to the trustees of Rutgers. In part: “I understand that you are about to fill the chair vacated by the death of Prof. Lewis C. Beck and that the name of Harry R. Baldwin M.D. of this city is before you as candidate for this office. I have had the opportunity to become acquainted with the talents & character of Dr. Baldwin…He has talent, industry & happy manners, and I am sure he will soon prove himself worthy of your institution.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds and a couple slight brushes and mirroring to the text.
