Description

Rutherford B. Hayes

ALS signed “R. B. Hayes,” one page, 5 x 8, August 17, 1884. Letter to fellow Civil War soldier General Manning F. Force. Letter is written on the back of a very interesting printed pamphlet by the Trustees of the John F. Slater Fund, whose purpose was to uplift "the lately emancipated population of the Southern States and their posterity, by conferring on them the blessings of Christian education." In full: “We miss you and yours. We shall share your sorrow. We counted on a great deal of happiness during your visit. Our place was never in so good condition. But alas! The change in your Father's family is apalling [sic]. If anything occurs to change plans we shall be at home all of this month, and in September after the 10th. The first ten days of Sept. we go to the reunion of the Army of West Va. at Cumberland. Our friendliest regards to Mrs. Force.” In fine condition, with some mild toning. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
