Wells and Fargo sign an 1861 American Express stock certificate

Partly-printed DS, one page, 11.75 x 8, November 11, 1861. A handsomely engraved certificate for four shares of capital stock in the American Express Company, issued to John Butterfield, signed “Henry Wells” as President and “Wm. G. Fargo” as Secretary. In very good condition, with three vertical folds, one passing through a single letter of each signature, light scattered toning (heaviest at center), staple holes to the upper left, and a brush to Wells’s signature and a cancellation notation through the end of Fargo’s signature.
