Versatile Native American athlete (1887–1953), widely regarded as the finest all-around athlete of the twentieth century, who won two Olympic gold medals and excelled in football, baseball, and basketball. His Olympic medals were stripped from him for an ostensible violation of the amateur status rule (Thorpe had earlier played minor-league baseball) but were posthumously restored to him in 1983. Postcard, 5.25 x 3.25, mailed to the principal of a Dixon, California high school at which Thorpe was to speak. Postcard is a date reminder, filled out by Thorpe for a December 1 appearance, announcing “Jim Thorpe—Indian Athlete is coming.” Signed at the conclusion, “James Thorpe.” In very good to fine condition, with several creases, none affecting signature and some light adhesive remnants to upper left. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
