Original vintage pilot’s navigation map of the Japanese mainland, 17 x 11, signed aboard the USS Hornet before the famed Doolittle Raid on April 18, 1942, and headed at the top in an unknown hand “Tokyo Cruise.” Signed in fountain pen by 19 participants and personnel. Signers who participated in the raid are: J. H. Doolittle, William Fitzhugh, Robert M. Gray (killed in action in 1942), Jacob E. Manch, Everett W. Holstrom, David M. Jones, Eugene F. McGurl (killed in action in 1942), Dean E. Hallmark (one of three Raiders executed by the Japanese on October 15, 1942), Chase J. Nielsen, Charles McClure, Edward J. York, Kenneth E. Reddy (killed in 1942), Thomas R. White, William G. Farrow (executed by the Japanese on October 15, 1942). Also signed by Army Air Corps personnel who provided support aboard the Hornet, Joseph R. Klein, Glen C. Roloson (killed in action in 1943), Harry Johnson, Jr., H. M. Hinman, and Robert M. Hackney. In very good condition, with fragile intersecting folds, a few small edge tears, and some mild toning and creases. Accompanied by a 2002 letter from Chase Nielsen stating “the signatures on the map you sent would have to be signed aboard the carrier USS Hornet,” and stating he signed the map before the raid. Also included is a letter from author C. V. Glines stating the map is “very rare and is the first one I have seen like it.” A true rarity from World War II signed before the first daring air raid to strike the Japanese mainland.
