Dean Cornwell was born in Born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1892, and commenced working as a fine illustrator at the age of fourteen. By the 1930s Cornwell was known as the 'Dean of Illustrators' by his peers. In the 1940s, Dean Cornwell's incredible patriotic images were seen everywhere as he became one the U.S. Governments favorite illustrators for U.S. Propaganda posters during W.W.II. Dean Cornwells legacy in illustrating for major novels (The Robe), motion pictures, magizine articles, calendars, to major, blue chip U.S. Company's like Seagrams, Palmolive Soap, Scripps-Howard newspapers, Coca-Cola, Johnny Walker Whiskey, Goodyear, General Electric, General Motors, etc., etc. was vast, and truly nothing short of incredible!
Dean Cornwell's life's accolades, artist listings, museums exhibited is absolutely brilliant. Cornwell's paintings have been exhibited in the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Chicago Art Institute and the National Academy of Design. He taught and lectured at the Art Students League in New York City and at museums and art societies throughout the United States. Dean Cornwell was a member of the American Artists Professional League, The Califonia Art Club, The Century Club, New York City, The National Academy of Design, The National Arts Club, The National Society of Mural Painters, The Salmagundi Club, and The Society of Illustrators.
This painting being offered here is a superb original masterwork by Dean Cornwell. The work depicts a cowboy, seated in front of a pot-bellied stove, a cigarette clenched in his hand, with his gun-belt on, and a saddle in the foreground. A woman standing in the doorway is conversing with him dressed in a large fur coat.
