Description

“I was an exchange student in Norway in 1957 when the Soviet Union shocked the world by launching the first artificial satellite of the earth”

TLS signed “Jack,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, July 13, 1984. Letter to an admirer. In part: “Why did I decide to become an astronaut? I was an exchange student in Norway in 1957 when the Soviet Union shocked the world by launching the first artificial satellite of the earth. I observed first-hand the profound impact this event had on the international student community…There was wonder at this first reach by mankind in the new ocean of space; there was fear that the oppressive Soviet civilization would dominate humankind through use of its new technological prowess.” In fine condition, with some scattered light edge creases. Pre-certified Steve Zarelli and RR Auction COA.
