Description

“Our job...is to continue to build on our heritage and to never abandon it through lassitude or despair”

US Navy officer (1927–2004) and commander of the spy ship USS Pueblo, which was captured on January 23, 1968, by North Korea. TLS signed “L. M. Bucher,” one page, 8.5 x 11, August 28, 1970. Letter on the spirit of America. In part: “On the subject of promoting our country, I could go on for longer than I have paper to spin through this typewriter. However, in essence our way of life is best promoted by each person contributing to the very best of his ability to the improvement his or her relations with their close associates in such a way that those who follow will derive a maximum from our having been here. We must continue to build on the heritage that has been given us, building in ways that will protect all that is great about our laws and changing for the better those which are no longer applicable. We must accept the fact that humans are not now nor have they ever been perfect but all that has gone before has been in large measure a long fight toward that perfection and that which we have today is in fact far superior to that which has been the lot of those before us. Our job then is to continue to build on our heritage and to never abandon it through lassitude or despair. Those who condemn and wage war against the very system that permits their dissent have to be crazy. For if they succeed, I can assure you that it will not be they who will move in to pick up the pieces.” In fine condition, with a slight ding to the right edge and a few ink corrections throughout the letter.
