Popular soul and R&B singer-songwriter (1939–1984) who was one of Motown’s most successful artists during that label’s heyday in the 1960s and 1970s, recording such hits as ‘How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)’ and ‘I Heard It Through the Grapevine.’ A day before his 45th birthday, Gaye was shot and killed by his father during an argument over a business matter. Manuscript DS, signed “Marvin P. Gaye, Jr,” one lined page, 6 x 9, May 11, 1976. Document reads, “Received from Bank of America (Per/Pro - Greg Burgin) The sum of ten thousand dollars ($10,000) in respect of Denver engagement, May 15, 1976.” At the bottom is written, “Check for $10,000 cashed and paid to Marvin Gaye on May 11, 1976 at his home (Hidden Hills).” In fine condition, with staple hole to top left corner. Gaye was finishing up a very lucrative tour of the states, and was preparing for his first European tour in the summer of 1976. Pre-certified Roger Epperson/REAL and RR Auction COA.
