“Freedom comes at a very high price sometimes but it is really worth defending”

US Air Force officer (1917–2007) who was one of the four surviving prisoners of war from the Doolittle Raid in 1942. ALS signed “Chase J. Nielsen,” two pages, 5.5 x 8.5, personal letterhead, November 30, 2001. Letter to an educator. In part: “It’s difficult to write about 3.5 years as a Japanese POW and do it on one or two pages. Therefore, I have inserted a brochure about this period of my life and also my buddies. Of eight of us that were captured, three were executed, one died in prison, and four of us were liberated a week after VJ Day…I alone returned to China after the war and was witness to the International War Crimes Trials and also testified as to the atrocities committed by the four Japanese officers seated in the court room…I am very happy to have had a nice and enjoyable service career, and to have been able to support this great nation in her time of need. Freedom comes at a very high price sometimes but it is really worth defending.” In fine condition, with light intersecting folds. RRAuction COA.
