ALS signed “Henry W. Longfellow,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, April 27, 1876. Letter to Mr. Schlesinger. In part: “Can you tell me anything about W. S. S. Lang, who is collecting subscriptions in aid of a half-blind person by the name of Gunther? He was here today, and, I thought there was something rather suspicious about the whole business. Two or three years ago he came on a similar errand. He was then raising funds to send Gunther back to Germany, but he was never sent back. Now he wants to send him into the country. As I do not know Mr. Lang, I do not know what the right and wrong of the matter may be.” In fine condition, with some scattered mild toning. Longfellow performs his due diligence after an attempt to take advantage of his widely admired gentleness and modesty. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
