War correspondent (1887–1939) who lived a life of danger; he was one of radio’s first news commentators, known for his fast talking delivery. Serving as a World War I correspondent, Gibbons lost an eye after being hit by German gunfire while attempting to rescue an American soldier, at the Battle of Belleau Wood, France.
