Description

South African 1984 tour program acquired during the tumultuous boiling point of the Apartheid

Queen Works! 1984 Bophuthatswana tour program, from the South African leg of their tour, 9.5 x 13, signed on the front cover in blue ballpoint by Freddie Mercury, Roger Taylor, Brian May, and John Deacon. Creasing and moderate handling wear to program, corner dings, and some contrast to portions of names against darker background, otherwise fine condition. Queen’s ‘The Works’ tour was one of their largest; they performed in Bophuthatswana, South Africa at the Sun City Super Bowl Stadium to a sold out crowd of 54,000 fans in October 1984. At this point in time, the tumultuous South African apartheid was reaching its boiling point and as a result many other performers—Bruce Springsteen, U2, and The Ramones—refused to play this arena. Queen, though, claimed naïveté to the social unrest; it has been speculated that their promoters secured them a million dollar per night performance fee. Pre-certified Roger Epperson/REAL and RR Auction COA.
