President Roosevelt issues a check to a White House clerk, who would soon commit suicide due to overwork during the administration

Personal check, 8.25 x 2.75, filled out in another hand and signed by Roosevelt, as president, payable to T. H. Netherland for $42.55, February 23, 1909. In very good condition, with cancellation holes and light brushing to first name of signature, cancellation cut to body, as well as a light bank stamp. Thomas H. Netherland served as a clerk in the White House, whose main responsibility was issuing social invitations. On May 12, 1909, Netherland shot himself in a fit of depression due to a nervous breakdown resultant from overwork in the closing days of his White House service.
