Description

A South–side view of the Rebellion

Printed broadside, 9 x 20, entitled “Epitaph—South-Side View of the Rebellion,” written at the commencement of the Civil War on the Dissolution of the Union. In part: “Here lie the mutilated and disjointed remains of noblest form of Government ever contrived by the wisdom of Man…Of its genuiness there can be no doubt; and believing it [the broadside] will be read with deep interest by thousands of the loyal States, we here re-publish it and here present a perfect fac-simile…Those who desire to know what reason our erring brethren in the disaffected States can assign for taking up arms against the Government may learn by reading our paper…Let this paper be carefully read.Jackson…his few and memorable words were: 'The Union - it must and shall be preserved' of Adams, his great competitor…'I beseech Abolitionists themselves solemnly to pause in their mad and fatal course…These sentiments, and many more, eloquently uttered on the occasion by patriotic citizens from all parts of the Confederacy.” Intersecting folds, scattered creases and wrinkles, toning and soiling, few small pinholes of paper loss, and rough edges, otherwise very good condition.
