A newsman himself, Harding pays tribute to the “crew of the Magpie” in a Harris and Ewing portrait

Vintage matte-finish 6.25 x 10.25 Harris and Ewing photo, signed and inscribed in the lower border in fountain pen “To the newspaper crew of the Magpie from one who cherishes his connection with the fourth estate. Good wishes! Warren G. Harding.” In very good condition, with moderate silvering to edges, and darker portions of image and background, and some mild border toning. The “fourth estate” refers to the press, first used by Thomas Carlyle in 1837. Harding bought the Marion Star in 1884, and held ownership of the paper until 1923.
