TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, United States Senate letterhead, March 20, 1956. Letter to Georgette G. Laserte, Chairman Library Board of Trustees and Centennial Committee, Leominster Public Library, Leominster, Massachusetts. In full: “Many thanks for your letter of recent date inviting me to speak at the special ceremonies marking the 100th anniversary of the Leominster Public Library on May 6. I certainly appreciate your writing me and I would like very much to be with you, but unfortunately I have a commitment for that day in the western part of Massachusetts and therefore it will be impossible for me to accept your very kind invitation. Again many thanks and with every good wish.” In a seven-word handwritten postscript, Kennedy adds, “many thanks for your very kind invitation.” In fine condition. Kennedy’s prior commitment was to speak to Democratic leaders in the Berkshires about ousting the Chairman of the Democratic State Committee, a major obstacle to his political aspirations, at a meeting to be held two weeks later.
