Union general and onetime commander of the Army of the Potomac (1824–1881); the distinctive whiskers he sported gave rise to the word ‘sideburns.’ ALS signed “A. E. Burnside,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, United States Senate Chamber, Washington letterhead, June 26, 1879. General Burnside writes to the Honorary Simon Stevens of New York, in part: “I am in no way identified either by interest or prejudice in any of the routes, but am guided in my actions by a desire to protect the interests and integrity of our country.” Two horizontal mailing folds, one of which lightly grazes the signature, a few trivial stray marks, and pencil notations to the top edge, otherwise fine condition.
