Description

“Take good care of her, take her shoes off...and keep her away from the other as they kick each other”

American soldier (1839–1925) who earned a niche in military history as the only man to serve as an officer in the Civil War, Indian Wars, and Spanish-American War. Though the nearly eighty-year-old Miles volunteered to serve during World War I, his offer was declined by Woodrow Wilson. ALS, four pages, 6 x 9.5, Hotel Somerset, Commonwealth Ave, Boston letterhead, June 1, 1911. Miles writes to his nephew who is looking after his farm, in part: “I think I will not sell the large brown mare…I intend to bre[e]d her again. Take good care of her, take her shoes off…and keep her away from the other as they kick each other. I think you better keep the cattle in the yard for the present or until you have some heavy rains to bring that grass up,” adding a post script and signing his initials, “N. A. M.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, light creasing, and a few trivial ink marks. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
