Four ALSs and one TLS, each signed “Lewis Mumford,” ranging in date from 1924 through 1978, and all but one on 8.5 x 11 beige sheets, the last one written on personal letterhead. All of the letters are addressed to “Mrs. Hopkins,” and an excerpt from each follows: May 6, 1924: “I have just returned from a bout of lecturing at Madison & Chicago, & I recall with regret the hectic days that preceded my departure…Providence seems determined to keep us from meeting: but I shall outwit Providence yet! Madison was only compared to Amherst: but the liveliness of the conversation recalled your influence, if the quality of the beverages didn’t.” February 5, 1930: “If only I could be of service in London: unfortunately, all the people I knew there in 1920 have been scattered to the ends of the earth, quite literally…They were such nice people, too, and you would have enjoyed each other—if only they had stayed put! But it’s that kind of world, isn’t it?” January 10, 1932: “Yes, I am still here, when I am not gallivanting over the country!” February 7, 1932: “Mr. Lindsay’s predicament is a shameful one…He was the real thing.” July 10, 1978: “…only television stars and baseball players favor their admirers with autographed photos.” Intersecting folds, a few rusty paperclip impressions, and a few small tears, otherwise fine condition.
