American character actress (1880–1962). In 1939, after a well-regarded stage career and a string of small, often uncredited movie parts, Blandick landed her most memorable role—Auntie Em in MGM’s The Wizard of Oz. After Oz, Blandick returned to supporting and bit roles and committed suicide by suffocation at the age of 81. Nostalgic vintage glossy 8 x 10 double-weight Universal Pictures publicity photo of Blandick as Miss Murfee from 1934 film Beloved, signed and inscribed vertically in black ink, “To John B. Callahan—Sincere good wishes, Clara Blandick.” In fine condition, with light creasing to the left corners, and some light brushing to the signature. Dated just five years before her greatest role as Auntie Em, photos of Blandick are of the utmost scarcity. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
