German-American poet (1884–1962) who gained worldwide fame in the first decade of the twentieth century. He was also widely known as a pro-Nazi propagandist, organizing a gathering of 20,000 ‘Friends of New Germany’ at Madison Square Garden in 1934. After being indicted and convicted under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, Viereck was imprisoned from 1942–1947.
