Description

“I had never written or seen a script before accepting the ‘Shane’ assignment”

American novelist, screenwriter, and historian (1901–1991). Guthrie was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1950 for the novel, The Way West. TQS on a beige 7 x 5 sheet. Guthrie writes, in full: “Writers don’t retain, because they haven’t been given, copies of their sreeen [sic] plays. So I can’t quote from ‘Shane.’ My recollections of the months I spent writing it are altogether pleasant. Principally, that’s because of the director, George Stevens. He was great. When I advanced a suggestion, he was quick to examine and accept it. I had similar assistance from him. Not every screen writer is so lucky. I had never written or seen a script before accepting the ‘Shane’ assignment. I spent the first three days in Hollywood studying others’ work. Then I had a conference with Stevens and went to work. The time it took? About six months.” In fine condition, with a bit of trivial soiling. RRAuction COA.
