Jay Gould

Financier well known for his stock market manipulation of railroad securities; he also tried to corner the gold market, causing the “Black Friday” stock market crash of September 1869. DS, one page, 15.5 x 8, March 24, 1880. Stock certificate issued to W. E. Connor for “100 shares of the Capitol Stock of the Missouri Kansas and Texas Railway Company,” signed at the conclusion by Gould as president, the secretary, and signatures on the reverse. In good to very good condition, with intersecting folds, scattered creasing and light soiling, uniform toning, some mild tears to the left and right edge, a cancellation stamp and holes, the latter affecting the signature, with a larger area of paper loss comprised of cancellation holes, and a receipt affixed to the left edge.
