ANS signed “Bruce,” on the reverse of one of his personal business cards 3.5 x 2, no date. Brief note to his top instructor Dan Inosanto, Lee writes, in full: “Dave’s a student of James Lee—let him train [sic] in the class.” In very good condition, with some scattered light toning and soiling, mostly to blank edges, and some toning and light surface loss to reverse. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from James Coburn Jr., son of actor James Coburn. In part, “I, James Coburn JR, state that this Bruce Lee business card was given to my late father James Coburn Senior by the legendary martial arts action star, Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee and my father were close friends and Bruce Lee also trained my father in his art of Jeet Kune Do. On occasion, Bruce Lee gave my father certain materials that reflected what was going on within their friendship, training, or gift related. This signed card was one such item.…Bruce Lee wrote this message on his business card to his top instructor Dan Inosanto, letting him know about a student that trained in Oakland at Bruce Lee’s Gung Fu Institute who wanted to visit the Los Angeles Chinatown school. My father acquired this card from Bruce Lee to bring down to Los Angeles and give it to Dan Inosanto, but my father did not have a chance to meet up with him and kept this card in his possession up until he passed away and then it was turned over to me.” Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute was founded in the Chinatown District of Los Angeles, California, in February 1967 by Lee and Inosanto was appointed head instructor. Lee made only three Senior instructors in his lifetime: Taky Kimura (Seattle), James Lee (Oakland), and Dan Inosanto (Los Angeles). In 1970, Bruce Lee advised Dan Inosanto to “officially” close the doors of the J.F.G.F. Institute, and continue teaching the students in his “backyard gym” in Carson, California.
