Description

“I try very hard not to be a fool about my own work, for I detest the Narcissus of the arts, any sort of self-love seems to me a hindrance to ripeness, though I do not think that one should loathe oneself either”

American writer (1900–1977) who primarily flourished through the mediums of novels, essays, and autobiographies. TLS, one page on thin paper, 8 x 10.5, August 19, 1960. Dahlberg writes from Soller de Mallorca, Spain, adding a few edits in blue ballpoint. In part: “City Lights Books proposes to re-publish Bottom Dogs, my first novel, and I have suggested that I attack it. I consider the book a mistake; every book no doubt is, but what is non-human in it appals [sic] me, and I have little excuse for having it reprinted it save that it will call attention to my later works, and also because of that devil, pecunia…I try very hard not to be a fool about my own work, for I detest the Narcissus of the arts, any sort of self-love seems to me a hindrance to ripeness, though I do not think that one should loathe oneself either.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, light creasing, a small tear to the right edge.
