Description

Francis Chantrey

English sculptor of the Georgian era (1781–1841). Some of his more notable works include several statues—George Washington at the State House in Boston, George III in the Guildhall in London, the Duke of Wellington at the London Exchange, and King George IV in Trafalgar Square, various monuments for St. Paul’s Cathedral, and his acclaimed busts, including the Sleeping Children at Lichfield Cathedral and the statue of Lady Louisa Russell. ALS signed “Fr. Chantrey,” one page, 4.5 x 7.25, affixed to a slightly larger sheet, Belgrove Place, June 16, 1834. Chantrey writes, in part: “Having no knowledge of the size of the portrait…I have been at a loss how to provide for its conveyance. The bearer however is an intelligent careful man (Mr. Smith) who will take suitable means of conveying it safe. I am anxious to have it in my possession before I see the King.” In very good condition, with rippling, light toning, and a few stray ink marks. RRAuction COA.
