Description

Preparing to fire his children’s well-liked governess, Stewart surprisingly blurts “to hell with the kids”

ALS signed “Jim,” one page both sides, 7 x 10.25, personal letterhead, and the date October 15, 1951, written in another hand in the top right hand corner. In part: “Dear Gary–Thanks for the good letters…I don’t see how the kids stand that governess they have now. We will have to get someone else I think, before I get home, as I don’t know weather [sic] I can take that–to hell with the kids. I can’t tell you how great this is down here…It was a smart move to come down here…I think you had better tell them to go ahead with the dam–I would sure raise hell about it if I owned property below the dam but if that is all worked out O. K. I would think it would be smart to put a well-protected spill gate in the dam so that it could be completely emptied…Once this rest is over I want to get home and not sit on a damn boat for five days. I’ll make arrangements here and let you know if I need help. Keep pretty close tab on the house. We thought Ronald sounded a little sad when we talked to him. Did you forget to salute?” In fine condition, a few creases and two punch holes to the top, affecting a couple words of text. With four young children at home, including new twin daughters, family life began to wear on Stewart, who came to relish time away and his personal freedom, as he did in Oregon while filming Bend of the River. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
