Confederate general (1835–1909), known for being the only Confederate general to fight on both sides during the Civil War. War-dated manuscript DS, one page, 8 x 12.5, February 19, 1862. Document headed “Special Order No. 57,” directing the recruitment of new regiments. In full: “Captain W. R. Bradfute, C.S.A., is hereby authorized to raise & organize for immediate service as many regiments of Infantry as may arm and offer their services.
II The subsistence & ord. officers at this post, will issue subsistence & ammunition on Captain Bradfute’s requisition.
III Capt J. J. Gaines, Lieut. Calhoun, Hart’s Battery & Lieut. McNally, Gaines Battery, will report to Captain Bradfute to assist the organization of the regiments.
IV Capt Hart will assume command of all the Artillery temporarily. By order of Genl. McCulloch.”
