American writer and diplomat (1819–1891) who, after a long and successful career as a poet, satirist, and essayist, served as minister to the court of Spain. ALS signed “J. R. Lowell,” one page, 4.5 x 7, Legation of the United States, London letterhead, March 21, 1884. Lowell writes to a Miss Goddard, in part: “I can’t allow you to go on thinking that my official position ever occurred to me, except inasmuch as the number of people who came to see me that morning in consequence of it obliged me to write to you by a secretary.” In fine condition, with light toning around the edges.
