Union major general who fought at Antietam and Second Bull Run. Porter was court-martialed in 1863 for disobeying an order from Gen. Pope to attack but was exonerated in 1878. ALS signed “F. P. Porter,” one page, 5.5 x 8.5, Central Rail Road Co. of New Jersey letterhead, September 20, 1879. In a request to famed engraver, publisher, and plate printer J. C. Buttre, Porter writes, in full: “Please inform me what would be the price of 10 to 50 copies of my photographs from your plate—done on paper for a book—for insertion in a pamphlet.” In very good condition, with scattered light toning and soiling, diagonal crease through the letterhead and a mild crease to the top left corner, and a few notations in another hand.
