LS, three pages, on two lightly-lined adjoining sheets, 7.75 x 9.75, April 27, 1873. Letter written from Camp Sturgis to Lt. E. G. Mathey of the 7th Cavalry. In part: “The Lieut. Colonel Commanding has been directed by telegraphic order from Dep’t H’dqrs to send a competent officer to investigate and report upon the amount of hay and fuel which can be obtained for the supply of this command between Forts Randall and Sully. It is important that this information reach these H’dqrs at the earliest practicable moment, you will therefore upon your arrival at Fort Sully report by telegraph the result of your investigation. You will confer with Lt. Nowlan who will inform you as to the amount of hay and fuel which will be required. You will, so far as practicable arrange for the purchase and delivery at the regular camping stations between Forts Randall and Sully…In addition to the report which you will send by telegraph from Fort Sully you will also mail a written report at the same time. Upon completion of these duties you will return to this command with as little delay as practicable. Your services will be particularly desired and of special benefit during the march from this point to Fort Sully.” Small areas of tape repair along horizontal mailing folds, with a couple over portions of text, but not affecting legibility, and scattered wrinkling and soiling, otherwise fine condition.
